Grant Program

The American Pilgrims on the Camino Grant Program works towards fulfilling the organization's vision and mission:

  • Our mission: To foster the enduring tradition of the Camino by supporting its infrastructure, by gathering pilgrims together, and by providing information and encouragement to past and future pilgrims.

In line with its vision and its mission, American Pilgrims offers grants through two programs with different goals and requirements:

Grants Awarded over the past three years include:

Infrastructure Grant Program

Infrastructure grants are for projects whose aim is to develop and improve the infrastructure of the Camino de Santiago. These are typically made to non private albergues or to non-profit organizations that work to further develop the infrastructure of the Camino in Spain, France and Portugal. Each grant is limited to a maximum of $6,000. Applicants whose grants are accepted for three consecutive years must wait at least one year before being eligible to receive another award.

Individuals, for-profit enterprises and entities fully subsidized by local, regional or federal governments are not eligible to apply. Grants are not made for funding general operations of an organization or albergue.

Proposal Preparation and Submission

Proposals must be submitted using the online American Pilgrims grant application form. The deadline for submission is February 1, 2019. Click HERE for the application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Proposal Review
Proposals will be reviewed by a committee composed of the American Pilgrims’ Board of Directors and members at large. The committee recommends proposals to the Board, with final funding approval made by the Board.

Proposals should address the project’s ability to further American Pilgrims’ vision and mission, and the applicant’s resourcefulness in seeking funding and resources from other sources. Because grant funds are limited, applicants should be aware that American Pilgrims may be able to award only a portion of the amount requested.

Proposal Funding

Notification of funding will be made no later than May 1, 2019. Successful applicants will be required to complete and submit the American Pilgrims Grant Acceptance Form prior to the transfer of any funds.

Spending and Reporting Policies

American Pilgrims funding is to be spent within one calendar year of the award. Grant recipients must submit a final report within six months of the expenditure of the American Pilgrims grant funds.

The Michael Wyatt Hospitalero Service Grant Program

The Michael Wyatt Hospitalero Service Grant helps American Pilgrims members with a financial need have an hospitalero volunteer service experience, allowing them to “give back” to the Camino. The $500 grants help offset the cost of travel from the U.S. to Europe to serve as a volunteer hospitalero at a Camino albergue for a minimum of two weeks. The hospitalero assignment must be completed during or the calendar year following the award. Funding is provided as a reimbursement once the assignment has been completed.

This program is named in loving memory of The Reverend Michael Wyatt, who served as Chair of the American Pilgrims Board of Directors from 2006 – 2008. Michael’s insightful, wise, enthusiastic and caring leadership and belief in service to pilgrims were key factors in American Pilgrims’ ability to blossom into a truly national organization. Michael passed away in July of 2009.

Proposal Submission
The hospitalero service should be completed during the current or following calendar year of the scholarship grant.

     • Applicants must be a current member of American Pilgrims on the Camino at the time of application and service.
Applicants must demonstrate financial need, which can be addressed on the application.

In order to encourage new hospitaleros, first-time volunteers will have priority.

Applicants should plan to serve as an hospitalero in an albergue sponsored by the Spanish Federation of Camino Associations or any non-private albergue on any of the various routes on the Camino. This grant program does not extend to volunteer service in the Santiago Pilgrim Welcome Office, the Ribadiso Welcome Service or Terra Nova Pilgrim House.

Funding and Post-Volunteer Responsibilities

Upon return, the grant recipient must provide a letter or certificate from the albergue or Spanish Federation verifying his/her volunteer assignment, and submit a written account of the hospitalero experience. This account may be published  in La Concha, American Pilgrims’ newsletter. Funding for travel to Spain to volunteer as an hospitalero will be provided to the volunteer after he/she returns from his/her assignment.
